Initial reports obtained by Naija News unveil the grim aftermath of the attacks, with armed assailants storming a mosque in Eastern Burkina Faso during Sunday’s early hours, resulting in the tragic loss of numerous lives.
Confirming the devastating incident, security sources in the region detail the ruthless assault, stating, “Armed individuals attacked a mosque in Natiaboani on Sunday around 5:00 am, resulting in several dozen being killed.”
Local residents recount scenes of horror as the assailants target worshippers gathered for morning prayers, predominantly Muslim men who fell victim to the senseless violence.
The village of Essakane bore the brunt of the bloodshed, with 12 individuals perishing at the scene and three more succumbing to their injuries while undergoing medical treatment. Two additional individuals sustained injuries of varying severity during the assault, further compounding the tragedy.
In a parallel attack, gunmen targeted a Catholic congregation gathered for mass in the northern village of Essakane, claiming the lives of at least 15 worshippers in a heinous act of terror.
The vicar-general of the Catholic Diocese of Dori, Abbot Jean-Pierre Sawadogo, condemns the attack as a “terrorist attack,” underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Amidst the devastation, Sawadogo calls for prayers for the deceased, the healing of the wounded, and the conversion of those perpetrating violence in the nation.
The assaults come amidst ongoing unrest in Burkina Faso, where armed groups have unleashed a wave of violence, targeting both Christian churches and Muslim congregations, and contributing to a climate of fear and instability.
As Burkina Faso grapples with the escalating security crisis, exacerbated by porous borders and regional instability, the nation faces a daunting challenge in restoring peace and safeguarding its people from the scourge of violence.
