The Northern Governors Forum has maintained its strong opposition to the federal government’s proposed Tax Reform Bills, citing concerns over the negative impact they could have on the northern region. proposed changes, particularly the new VAT distribution model based on the location of company headquarters, tax offices, and consumption points.
The governors argue that this system would disproportionately affect northern states, which have fewer corporate headquarters and tax offices compared to other regions, potentially harming their economic interests.
Despite the government’s push for the reforms, President Bola Tinubu has shown no signs of backing down, defending the bills as crucial for Nigeria’s economic restructuring. However, northern governors, including those from Bauchi, Borno, Nasarawa, and Kano states, remain resolute in their stance, urging the president to reconsider and engage in further consultations with the region.
The governors emphasize that the tax reform bills appear to favor southern states, especially Lagos, and could disadvantage the north, which is already grappling with challenges like inflation and insecurity. As a result, the Northern Governors Forum and their National Assembly representatives are united in calling for the withdrawal of the bills to allow for broader consultations.
This ongoing opposition reflects the growing divide between the northern and southern regions on the proposed reforms, highlighting the need for a more inclusive approach to tax policy in the country.
