2023 Elections: Presidential Candidates Sign Peace Pact Three Days To Poll

The presidential candidates of 18 political parties are expected to sign a pact for a peaceful election this Saturday.

Several of them converged on Abuja on Wednesday for the historic event.

Bola Tinubu (APC), Atiku Abubakar (PDP), Rabiu Kwankwaso (NNPP), and Dan Nwanyanwu (ZLP) were among the presidential candidates present, while the Labour Party was represented by Datti Baba-Ahmed, its vice-presidential candidate.

Unlike elections prior to 2015, when the National Peace Committee was established, presidential candidates for the 2023 elections are required to sign the Peace Accord twice.

The first was signed in September of last year, prior to the start of Campaigns. That agreement was signed in order to bind the candidates to a peaceful campaign.

This is the second and final signature by the candidates, and it confirms their commitment to a peaceful presidential election in 2023.

General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Bishop Matthew Kukah, and Dr John Momoh, CON are among the peace committee members present.

Others present included the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba and former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who is leading the Commonwealth Election Observer Group to Nigeria.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment to holding the elections on time.

Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, also assured Nigerians of a fair election.

In his remarks, the IGP criticized the lack of adherence to the spirit of the September peace accord, which committed the candidates to an issue-based campaign.

Baba urged political parties to rein in their supporters in order to ensure a peaceful election.

He also urged the candidates to follow in the footsteps of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who accepted the results of the 2015 elections and contributed to the country’s peace.

In her remarks, the European Union (EU) ambassador to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi, urged Nigeria to set a good example and send a strong message to the rest of the world about the importance of democracy consolidation.

She urged all candidates to accept the election results and seek legal redress if they were dissatisfied.

The Commonwealth Secretary General, Baroness Scotland, emphasized the significance of the 2023 general elections, emphasizing Nigeria’s significant position on the continent.
