All Eyes On Makinde As Three G5 Governors Lose Senatorial Bid
It is not the best of times for five aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) known as the G5 as three of the ‘Integrity Group’ failed in their quests to cross over to the Senate after their two-term tenure of eight years each.
Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Nyesom Wike (Nigeria) comprise the G5 (Rivers).
After the party’s presidential primary in May 2022, the five governors formed an alliance to demand that the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, step down for a southern replacement as a condition for supporting the party’s flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar, in the February 25 election. In the recently concluded elections, both Atiku and Ayu called the governors’ bluff and refused to cave to their demands.
In the presidential election, Atiku lost in all five G5 states, while Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi won Enugu and Abia, and All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu won Oyo, Benue, and Rivers.
Of the G5, Ortom, Ikpeazu, Ugwuanyi, and Wike are all two-term governors, while Makinde is a one-term governor who is running for re-election on March 11, 2023 and hopes to stay in office for another four years.
Interestingly, Ortom, Ikpeazu, and Ugwuanyi attempted to cross over to the Senate, which has been described as a “retirement home” for former governors, but they were defeated in the presidential and National Assembly elections on February 25.
With three of his comrades defeated, all eyes will be on Makinde on March 11. Will he make it through and break the G5’s losing streak? The only way to know is to wait and see.
But for the time being, this is how Ortom, Ugwuanyi, and Ikpeazu lost their Senate bids:
Ortom
Ortom was defeated in his bid for the Benue North West Senatorial District seat in the National Assembly.
He was defeated by Titus Zam of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the district.
The APC candidate received 143,151 votes, while the PDP received 106,882 and the Labour Party received 51,950.
Interestingly, Zam was an appointee of Ortom during his first tenure, from 2015 to 2019, where he served as the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs before resigning on loyalty grounds.
Ugwuanyi
Ugwuanyi’s bid to represent Enugu North Senatorial District in the National Assembly was defeated.
In the election held on Saturday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ugwuanyi was defeated by Okechukwu Ezea of the Labour Party.
While Ezea won with 104,948 votes, Ugwuanyi came in second with 46,948 votes.
Ugwuanyi has been governor of the South-East state since 2015 and his eight-year constitutional limit will end in May. Before being elected governor in 2015, he served in the House of Representatives.
Ikpeazu
Ikpeazu, likewise, was defeated in his bid to represent Abia South Senatorial District in the upcoming 10th National Assembly. The outgoing governor received 28,422 votes and was defeated by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who received 49,693.
Similarly, four other outgoing governors failed in their bids to join Nigeria’s Senate after serving two terms of eight years each. Darius Ishaku (Taraba), Simon Lalong (Plateau), Ben Ayade (Cross River), and Atiku Bagudu are the candidates (Kebbi).
Governors David Umahi (Ebonyi), Abubakar Bello (Niger), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) all won parliamentary elections on Saturday. Ex-governors who have been elected to the Senate include Adams Oshiomhole (Edo) and Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom).
Though results for the presidential and National Assembly elections are still being tallied, newcomers are poised to unseat some NASS landlords who have been in the red and green chambers for the past 24 years.
