From NLC President To Senate President : “Senate Rules” And Adams Oshiomhole’s Call For SP
The beauty of the incoming administration is that it represents a fresh start towards a new set of governance. From the presidential villa to the national assembly and across the majority of states, it is a new dawn of fresh faces.
This means new hope and a fresh breath of air; no two people are same, thus the incoming administration would function extremely independently from the status quo, whether you embrace the fact or not it is a doctrine of the DEFAULT SYSTEM…CONTINUE READING.
While the battle and intense lobby for principal positions in the National Assembly has begun in earnest across political parties, Nigerians’ expectations of who will head the 10th NASS are also high.
Who is eligible to run for the seat of the senate presidency is a hot topic that everyone is talking about besides the geopolitical region, and this debate is especially hot right now because of the contest’s uniqueness.

Several have promoted the claim that, in accordance with standing Senate rules, only a ranking senator may assume the office of Senate President, but others have refuted this claim.
Before we get started on our discussion of today’s potential candidates for the 10th Senate president, I want to pose a rhetorical question:
If someone had told you 12 years ago that the NASS would have a senate president from one political party and the deputy senate president from a different political party, what would your response have been, just as it was with Saraki of the APC and Ekweremadu of the PDP?
The “infamous” Senate rule that has been ferried around that it excludes a first timer may, however, have been created for a certain purpose and for certain people in a particular time frame for a singular purpose.
A list of all the Senate Presidents from 1960 to date demonstrates clearly that if there ever was a standing rule like that, then the exigencies was definitely for a narrow self-centered purpose.
Here is the full list of all Senate Presidents right from independence to present day.
One point that can never be disputed is that the ruling party, the APC, will produce the next Senate President, and what the party and its president-elect require is a NASS that is entirely committed to its vision and ideas for taking the country forward.
Oshiomhole, thankfully, matches the card; the Deputy Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council is an embodiment of performance and competency; Oshiomhole’s pro-labor views are just what the people requires.
As president of the Senate, he would not only speed up the presidency’s delivery of the constitutionally guaranteed dividend of democracy, but he would also be a benefit to the populace, who look up to pro-people policies that ensure their safety.
To a considerable extent, the Senate also supervises the private sector by ensuring that their corporate existence is beneficial to the people and host communities.
With Adams Oshiomhole as Senate President, most agencies, both public and private, would realize that their fundamental services are to fulfill the decent expectations of the populace, and no one is more positioned to protect their interests than former NLC president, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole.
As a former APC National Chairman, he will undoubtedly ensure that the party is well protected and carried forward in its legislative tasks.
In other words, his election as SP would benefit both the political elite, as represented by the APC, and the general public, who would be able to rest easy knowing that their interests are being protected by the government’s legislative branch. This would be a win-win situation for Nigerians.
At this juncture, Nigerians do not need trial and error; only dedicated and trustworthy hands should be given the opportunity to turn the country around.
