The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, will once again face South Africa in the preliminary qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The draw also placed Nigeria in Group C alongside Benin Republic, coached by former Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, as well as Rwanda and Lesotho.

The official draw for the 2026 World Cup took place after the 45th CAF General Assembly, attended by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe and FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Abidjan.

African football legends, including Emmanuel Eboue, Asamoah Gyan, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Emmanuel Adebayor, Wael Gomaa, and Alexandre Song, assisted in the draw.

A total of 54 African nations will compete for the 9.5 allocated spots for Africa in the World Cup.

The qualifiers are set to begin in November, with each group winner automatically qualifying for the tournament.

The four best runners-up will participate in a CAF Play-Off tournament, and the winner of that tournament will proceed to the FIFA Play-off Tournament, potentially securing the 10th spot for an African nation.

The draw split the nations into nine groups of six, and the journey towards qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA will begin in the coming months.

The matches promise to be exciting and highly competitive as teams vie for their chance to represent Africa on the global stage.

The full list of the draw reveals the groups as follows: Group A – Egypt, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Djibouti; Group B – Senegal, Congo DR, Mauritania, Togo, Sudan, South Sudan; Group C – Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Lesotho; Group D – Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Angola, Libya, Eswatini, Mauritius; Group E – Morocco, Zambia, Congo, Tanzania, Niger, Eritrea; Group F – Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Kenya, Gambia, Burundi, Seychelles; Group G – Algeria, Guinea, Uganda, Mozambique, Botswana, Somalia; Group H – Tunisia, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Malawi, Liberia, Sao Tome; Group I – Mali, Ghana, Madagascar, Central African Republic, Comoros, Chad.
