The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has provided clarification regarding the “let the poor breathe” joke he made during a plenary session on Tuesday, which received criticism from Nigerians.

Akpabio explained that his remark was not meant to insult the citizens, but rather to firmly reject any plan of increasing electricity tariffs for Nigerians due to the ongoing economic challenges faced by the people.

He made the comment while responding to a motion moved by Senator Akintunde Abiodun to stop the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and distribution companies (DisCos) from hiking tariffs.

In a statement released on July 27, the Senate President assured the public that the National Assembly takes all matters discussed during sessions seriously and that crucial issues are not treated with triviality.

He emphasized his commitment to working for the best interests of the Nigerian people, and with the appointment of new ministers, he hopes that the government can promptly address challenges and bring relief to the citizens, easing the current hardship experienced by Nigerians.
