Fani-Kayode Gives Tinubu Reasons To Stop ECOWAS Military Invasion Of Niger

Former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prevent the planned military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in the Republic of Niger.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Fani-Kayode expressed concerns that a military invasion aimed at restoring democracy in Niger would only exacerbate Nigeria’s problems.

He highlighted that Nigeria’s military is currently engaged in internal operations across the six geo-political zones and is resource-constrained due to economic challenges.

He questioned the feasibility of depending on Western countries for support, considering their own interests.

Fani-Kayode also pointed out the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees who remain unsettled in camps for over a decade, raising concerns about handling additional IDPs and refugees that could arise from the crisis.

He questioned the logic of attacking a country where civilians support their rulers and wondered who would bear the financial burden of an ECOWAS military intervention.

Fani-Kayode emphasized that Nigeria is not financially equipped to support the logistical requirements of going to war. He raised a series of questions for ECOWAS military commanders about the practicality and consequences of the intervention.

He highlighted the possibility of increased terrorist threats along Nigeria’s western borders if insurgents moved into neighboring countries like Benin and Togo. He cautioned that elements of ISIS, AQIM, and ISWAP had already penetrated close to Nigeria’s southwestern states.

Fani-Kayode suggested that Nigeria should prioritize conflict resolution mechanisms and address crucial questions before considering military intervention in Niger.
