As the Labour Party prepares to select its candidate for the Edo State governorship election, a crucial decision lies ahead. In this opinion piece, we urge the Labour Party National Working Committee to choose the path of meritocracy, selecting a candidate who meets the highest standards of capacity, competence, and character. Labour Party National Working Committee, choosing our candidate based on merit is crucial. We must resist pressures from Edo central and the sitting governor who wants a weak candidate for an easy win. We must select an aspirant who excels in capacity, competence, and capability.

We understand diverse interest groups’ pressures, but we must stand above the fray and do what’s right. Let the people’s will prevail. This will show the country we’re ready to lead and provide clear direction.

We understand that some party members prioritize personal gain, and few others support sectional interests, but we must focus on changing the narrative for the greater good of the state. Edo State has historically chosen governors based on merit, not zoning. We must reassess our leaders and prioritize the people’s needs.

Let’s seize this opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to meritocracy and show we’re a party that puts the people first. By doing so, we can create a better future for Edo State and set a precedent for the country. We must rise above personal interests and put the people’s needs first. The future of Edo State depends on it.

The choice before the Labour Party National Working Committee is clear: either prioritize meritocracy and select a candidate who truly serves the people’s interests or yield to pressure and risk losing the trust of the electorate and lose the election on 21/09/2024. By choosing the former, Labour Party can spearhead a new era of effective governance in Edo State, where competence and capacity trump personal interests.
