Lakewood Police Department spokesman John Romero confirmed Ward’s death on Friday, Feb. 16, after he succumbed to the severe consequences of the lizard’s bite. Despite efforts to save him, Ward’s condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his untimely demise.

The exact cause of Ward’s death remains under investigation by Jefferson County coroner’s officials, who are determining whether the venom from the Gila monster or an unrelated medical issue was responsible.

According to reports, Ward’s girlfriend made a harrowing discovery when she found Winston clamped onto her boyfriend’s hand, triggering immediate symptoms including vomiting and loss of consciousness. Ward was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support, but sadly, he was declared brain-dead five days later.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Ward’s girlfriend surrendered their two pet Gila monsters, Winston and Potato, to Lakewood Animal Control. Additionally, over two dozen spiders found in their home were rehomed, while the Gila monsters were transferred to Reptile Gardens near Rapid City, South Dakota.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with owning exotic pets, especially those with venomous capabilities. Gila monsters, while typically not deadly, possess potent venom that can cause severe reactions in humans, underscoring the importance of responsible ownership and awareness of local regulations regarding exotic animals.
