End Of The Road :Why Philip Shaibu Should Resign And Lick His Wounds By Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah

In African wisdom, it is said: “The tree that stands tallest in the forest invites the fiercest winds.” This adage speaks to the fleeting nature of power and the importance of humility in its possession.

In the ever-changing landscape of life, where power shifts like the sands of the desert, humility serves as a sturdy anchor, grounding us amidst the storm. For when we are humble, we recognize that power is but a passing breeze, and true strength lies in our ability to remain rooted in humility, no matter how high we may rise.

It is apparent and unmistakable that the deputy governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, is on the brink of impeachment at any moment now. What’s intriguing is that 21 members of the House of Assembly support this move, regardless of their political affiliations.

It is evident that Philip will not only struggle to survive this battle but also lose all the political prominence he has amassed over the years. Philip’s actions have inflicted considerable damage on Obaseki’s administration. What many overlook is that if a benefactor like Adams Oshiomhole and a beneficiary like Godwin Obaseki had worked together, the state would have seen greater progress.

For instance, during Oshiomhole’s administration, Edo State experienced a modernization of infrastructure. His projects set a high standard, including the construction of high-quality roads, a world-class hospital, the refurbishment and construction of schools famously known as the red roof revolution, as well as initiatives such as a stormwater control project and beautification and lighting enhancements throughout the city.

Obaseki, on his part, has contributed to the progress of Edo State. However, it is regrettable that the rift between Oshiomhole and Obaseki reportedly stemmed from actions attributed to Philip Shaibu, driven by his perceived personal ambitions. Shaibu’s alleged desire to become governor led him to formulate plans years in advance, a move that inherently strained his relationship with his boss, regardless of his loyalty.

Reportedly, Shaibu played a role in orchestrating the removal of Adams Oshiomhole as the APC National Chairman. He even publicly claimed credit for bringing Oshiomhole into politics, despite the lifeline Oshiomhole extended to Shaibu, who had never won an election before. At every opportunity, Shaibu allegedly sought to undermine Oshiomhole, creating further discord between them.

I recall an incident at a Catholic event in the Auchi Diocese, where Philip Shaibu served as the chairman. During a fundraising, Shaibu seemed determined to belittle Oshiomhole, possibly due to his resentment towards the enthusiastic reception Oshiomhole received upon entering the church. The atmosphere was electric, akin to the arrival of a legendary figure like Michael Jackson, as Adams made his entrance.

Throughout the political fray with Obaseki and Oshiomhole, Shaibu demonstrated a lack of maturity. While Obaseki often maintained silence, Shaibu eagerly sounded his trumpet as if heralding the apocalypse, ceaselessly tarnishing Oshiomhole’s reputation.

Had Shaibu possessed foresight, he would have recognized that Obaseki would not likely pass the mantle to his deputy, as is customary in 95% of Nigerian states. Why then did Shaibu not strategically position himself, perhaps aiming to secure a senatorial position?

Now, consider this: Adams Oshiomhole never sought the role of a senator. However, due to the disappointing actions of Philip and Obaseki, which falsely suggested Oshiomhole’s political demise, he felt compelled to return to serve his people.

Should Philip face impeachment, his downfall would be nothing short of ignominious. He would become a sudden pariah, reminiscent of corporate icon Cecila Ibru’s abrupt and permanent descent into obscurity. Indeed, Philip’s fate could prove even more dire than hers.

Given the current circumstances, it would be wise for Philip Shaibu to gracefully bow out and tend to the wounds of betrayal. Engaging in a futile battle would only lead to a dismal end, as Obaseki possesses the power to crush even the smallest of adversaries with a sledgehammer.

Impeachment would strip Philip of not only his entitlements but also his political credibility and support. It’s a fate he should avoid at all costs.

In the grand narrative of political intrigue and personal ambition, the story of Philip Shaibu serves as a poignant reminder of the perils of pride and the consequences of misplaced loyalty.

As we navigate the turbulent waters of power and ambition, let us heed the timeless wisdom that humility and integrity are the true hallmarks of leadership. For in the end, it is not the height of our ascent that defines us, but the depth of our character and the legacy of our actions.
