Just In: Former Chelsea Star Ryan-Bertrand Announces Retirement From Professional-Football

Ryan Bertrand, the former Chelsea left-back, has officially retired from professional football today, June 18, 2024.

Bertrand began his career at Chelsea in 2007, progressing from the club’s youth team. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he had loan spells at Bournemouth, Oldham Athletic, Norwich City, Reading, Nottingham Forest, and Southampton.

He made a total of 57 appearances for Chelsea, scoring two goals and providing two assists. His contributions helped secure one UEFA Champions League title, one Europa League trophy, one FA Cup, and one Community Shield for the club.

In 2015, Bertrand moved permanently to Southampton for a transfer fee of €13.30 million after leaving Chelsea. Following six years at Southampton, he joined Leicester City on a free transfer in 2021. His contract with Leicester City expired on July 1, 2023, after which he remained without a club.

Bertrand, who earned 19 caps for the England national team, announced his retirement during a live interview on Sky Sports.

“I will be retiring from football. It’s been a little while but I get asked a lot of questions – ‘When are you coming back, what are you doing?’ So, just to make that official I am retiring and very much looking forward to the next steps,” the 34-year-old footballer said.
