August 1st Protest Faces Increasing Opposition From Government And Groups

As the August 1st date approaches for the planned mass protest against poor governance, opposition to the demonstration is growing.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, has convened an emergency meeting in Abuja with ministers and security heads to address and potentially thwart the protest.

In response to the escalating tensions, pro-democracy groups, including The Forum for the Sustainance of Democracy, have called on organizers to cancel the event for the sake of peace.

Hon. Abdulrahman Buba Kwaccham, spokesperson for the forum, urged that dialogue and negotiations be prioritized over demonstrations. He highlighted that while there is a legitimate desire for change, history has shown that such protests can be exploited to create chaos, worsening the already dire economic conditions.

Kwaccham stated, “In these uncertain times, we see a growing call for peaceful protests from our youth seeking change and unity. However, the potential for these movements to be hijacked and used to spread discord is a real concern. Disruptions will only deepen our economic struggles and intensify the suffering of our people.”

He urged parents, community leaders, and influencers to steer the youth towards constructive engagements rather than destructive actions. Kwaccham also called on leaders—political, religious, and traditional—to work together to create a dialogue framework that addresses the nation’s pressing issues and ensures a better future for all Nigerians.

The proposed protest, which has gained significant attention on social media, is planned to occur across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Opposition parties view the protest as a fundamental right of citizens, while the ruling party contends that it is a strategic maneuver by the opposition to gain power through disruption.
