NNPCL Confirms Fuel Shortage In Abuja And Lagos, Promises Swift-Action
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has confirmed fuel supply and distribution challenges in some parts of Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and promised to work on restoring normalcy.
In a statement released on Saturday, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, attributed the scarcity to a hitch in the discharge operations of a couple of vessels. “The NNPC Ltd. wishes to state that the tightness in fuel supply and distribution witnessed in some parts of Lagos and the FCT is as a result of a hitch in the discharge operations of a couple of vessels,” Soneye said.
He assured that NNPCL is working around the clock with all stakeholders to resolve the situation and restore normalcy in operations.
The confirmation comes amid long queues in various parts of the country, with fuel prices reaching close to N1,000 per litre in some areas of Lagos and Abuja. This situation follows President Bola Tinubu’s announcement last year to end the fuel subsidy, a move aimed at saving scarce foreign reserves and redirecting funds to infrastructure and other projects. The termination of the subsidy has led to a more than threefold increase in fuel prices.
NNPCL has reiterated its commitment to resolving the supply issues and ensuring the regular availability of fuel in affected areas.
