Yemi Solade Challenges Legitimacy Of Nigerian Celeb Degrees After Benin Republic Certificate Scandal

Nollywood actor Yemi Solade has raised concerns regarding the future of degrees awarded to Nigerian celebrities by universities in Benin Republic and Togo. His reaction comes after the Nigerian government invalidated 22,789 degrees obtained from these countries.

The actor expressed his thoughts on Instagram, questioning the impact of the federal government’s decision on the numerous honorary doctorate degrees granted to Nigerian celebrities by these institutions. Solade’s post reads, “What happens to all the absurd doctorate degrees splashed on Nigerian celebs since FG has pronounced that degrees acquired from Benin Republic since 2017 are invalid?”

This development follows a recent statement by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, who revealed that over 22,000 Nigerians were found to be holding fake degree certificates from institutions in Benin Republic and Togo. The certificates were issued between 2019 and 2023 from universities not recognized by the respective countries to offer degree programs.

The Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring that individuals with authentic qualifications are not unfairly competing with those who obtained fake certificates. He added that measures are being taken to address the situation within the Ministry of Education, including disciplinary actions against staff involved in the procurement of these fake certificates.

The revelation has sparked widespread discussions across various platforms, with many Nigerians expressing concerns about the credibility of degrees awarded by foreign institutions, especially those in neighboring West African countries.
