Resident Doctors Commence Nationwide Warning Strike Over Abduction Of Colleague

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has begun a seven-day warning strike, effective from midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024. The strike is intended to pressure the government into securing the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a fellow resident doctor who has been held captive for over eight months.

Dr. Dele Abdullahi, NARD President, announced the decision following an Emergency National Executive Council meeting held virtually on Sunday, August 25, 2024. He emphasized that the strike would be comprehensive, with no emergency services provided during this period.

Dr. Popoola, who serves as a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was abducted nearly eight months ago along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.

NARD members have recently staged protests at tertiary hospitals across the country, demanding Dr. Popoola’s immediate release.

In a related development, the Nigeria Police Force has stated that it will not provide online updates regarding the rescue efforts of 20 abducted student doctors, citing security concerns. The Force’s Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, mentioned that Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is actively engaged with the Benue State Command to ensure the students’ safe return.

Adejobi emphasized the importance of a tactical approach to the rescue mission, noting that public updates could jeopardize the operation. He appealed for public support and patience as the police continue their efforts.

The abduction of 19 student doctors and one medical doctor occurred on Thursday while they were en route to Enugu for a Federation of Medical and Dental Students conference.
