Nigerian Government Disburses ₦14 Billion For 16 Foreign Missions Lacking Ambassadors
Amid significant delays in appointing new ambassadors, the Federal Government of Nigeria has reportedly spent approximately ₦14 billion on 16 foreign missions in July 2024.
This disbursement occurred despite the country being without official diplomatic representatives since September 2023, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive recalling all ambassadors appointed by his predecessor.
The funds, which covered personnel costs, were wired to missions in key locations such as Washington, London, and Beijing, among others.
This spending has raised concerns regarding the effectiveness and operational capacity of Nigeria’s diplomatic missions in the absence of appointed envoys.
Former Nigerian Ambassador to Singapore, Ogbole Ode, commented that while financial constraints have delayed ambassadorial appointments, heads of missions at the consulate level have been deployed.
However, the situation has sparked public concerns about Nigeria’s diplomatic representation and the potential impact on international relations.
