Joseph Momodu, Grace Bassey And Other Nollywood Stars Who Abandoned Acting Careers To Enlist In The United States Military

For years, Nollywood has remained a major hub for film and television talent, producing actors and actresses who have built thriving careers both on and off screen. However, a number of these entertainers have now taken a different route entirely, opting to leave the film industry behind after relocating abroad to pursue careers in the United States military.

According to Ireporter Online, several former Nollywood stars have transitioned from movie sets to military service in the United States, marking a significant shift in their professional journeys.

One of the most recent is Joseph Momodu, born Abubakar Sadiq Momodu, who completed his Basic Combat Training in April 2026 before officially enlisting in the US Army. Before his departure from acting, he featured in several Nollywood productions including Coming to Nigeria, Play 2 Kill, and A Fool for Trust, as well as television series such as Tinsel, Soul Sisters, and The Johnsons. He reportedly attributed his decision to serve to the influence of his late father, who once served in the Nigerian Police Force.

Similarly, actress Princess Chineke joined the US Army in December 2024 after relocating to the United States. Known for her roles in films like To Love a Sister, Stormy Hearts, and Masters at War, she publicly announced her enlistment on social media, stating that she had answered a call to serve her adopted country.

Actress and producer Mayowa Dosu also made the transition to military service after moving to the United States. Her enlistment, which came around the same period as Princess Chineke’s, marked a dramatic career shift from Nollywood filmmaking. She previously appeared in titles such as Fears, Mamami, and Compromise.

Another notable case is that of Grace-Charis Bassey, formerly known as Belinda Effah, who joined the US Navy in May 2025. After completing boot camp, she attained US citizenship and dedicated the milestone to her late father, a former naval commander. Before her departure from Nollywood, she earned recognition including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Most Promising Act of the Year.

Their decisions highlight a growing trend among some Nigerian entertainers abroad who are exploring military service in the United States as an alternative career path, often citing opportunities for personal development, discipline, and long-term stability.
