Tragedy On The Way To Service: Imo Army Recruitment Candidates Involved In Road Crash

Several candidates from Imo State recently shortlisted for recruitment into the Nigerian Army have sustained varying degrees of injuries after the vehicle transporting them to the Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna State, was involved in a road accident on Saturday.

According to reports monitored by Ireporter Online, the candidates were travelling to the military training facility to begin their basic military training when the accident occurred.

Sources familiar with the incident disclosed that the journey was being coordinated under the supervision of Lieutenant Colonel P.D. Ngal. The affected candidates had successfully completed the recruitment process and were en route to the training depot before the unfortunate accident disrupted their journey.

Eyewitness videos circulating online showed several injured candidates lying beside the road and inside damaged vehicles, while emergency responders and other motorists worked to evacuate the victims. Many of those injured were later taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not officially confirmed the cause of the accident or the number of casualties.

Military sources expressed concern that the incident could negatively affect the future of some of the injured candidates, explaining that recruits who sustain severe injuries before or during military training may be withdrawn from the programme on medical grounds.

According to the sources, the Nigerian Army does not permit candidates with serious medical conditions or injuries that could prevent them from completing the physically demanding training. Recruits who suffer major fractures or other incapacitating injuries are typically disqualified from continuing the exercise.

The Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria serves as the primary training institution for newly recruited non-commissioned soldiers, where successful applicants undergo months of intensive military instruction before their enlistment into active service. This training programme is separate from that of cadets at the Nigerian Defence Academy, who are prepared for commissioned officer roles.

At the time of this report, the Nigerian Army had yet to release an official statement regarding the accident.
