Nigerian Coach Reflects On Quarterfinal Loss Says ‘Proud Of The Girls’ After Battle With USA
Nigeria’s Under-17 Women’s coach, Bankole Olowookere, praised his players’ determination and growth throughout the 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup. The team’s journey ended with a 2-0 loss to the USA in the quarterfinals at Estadio Cibao in Santiago de Los Caballeros……..CONTINUE READING
The USA scored twice, with Kennedy Fuller netting just before halftime and Kimmi Ascanio adding to the lead in the second half. This win gave the USA some redemption after Nigeria’s victory over them in the 2022 tournament’s penalty shootout.
While the USA advances to the semifinals for the first time since 2008, Nigeria missed a second consecutive semifinal chance. Coach Olowookere, in a press conference reported by FIFA.com, expressed confidence in the team’s future potential.
“I’m incredibly proud of the girls,” Olowookere stated. “They gave their all, and while the outcome wasn’t what we wanted, I believe we can achieve even more in future tournaments.”
Nigeria entered the game with an undefeated group stage record but faced strong competition from the USA. A critical penalty before halftime put Nigeria behind when Jocelyn Travers was fouled, and Fuller converted the spot kick. Despite Nigeria’s efforts, including a close chance by Taiwo Afolabi, the USA’s Ascanio scored again to solidify their lead.
The USA will now face Korea DPR in the semifinals as they pursue their first title in the tournament’s history.
