Ex-Convict Tries To Flee Ibadan Court, Rearrested After Police Standoff

The incident occurred when Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Latunji stepped out of the courtroom to write her judgment. Bello was swiftly recaptured by police officers and a soldier, who threatened to shoot him if he did not halt his escape.

After being rearrested, the magistrate sentenced Bello to three years imprisonment for each of two offenses, with no option of fine. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Latunji based her verdict on strong evidence presented by the police and Bello’s confession. Despite his guilty plea, she emphasized the need for a deterrent sentence. The charges against Bello included conspiracy and theft, with the conviction stemming from his involvement in stealing electrical cables worth N3.5 million from a filling station in Odo-Ona Kekere, Ibadan.
