The PHRC comprises two plants, with the first operating at 60,000 barrels per day and the second, currently under development, designed for 150,000 barrels per day.

Onanuga also provided an update on the operational status of the 60,000bpd facility, stating that it is currently running at 70% of its installed capacity, with plans in place to ramp up production soon. He reassured that the refinery is receiving regular crude oil supplies, debunking previous claims that it lacked the necessary product for refining.

On Wednesday, Onanuga participated in a fact-finding mission to the 60,000bpd refinery, where he and his team, guided by the refinery’s Managing Director Ibrahim Onoja, toured the entire complex. The team inspected everything from the computerized control room to the loading bays, addressing concerns and clearing up misconceptions about the facility’s operations.

In a subsequent post on X titled “Setting the Record Straight on Port Harcourt Refinery,” Onanuga expressed confidence in the refinery’s progress. He emphasized that despite not yet operating at full capacity, the refinery is functional at 70% capacity and receiving consistent crude supplies. He also praised the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) for reviving what was once a “dead asset,” near the brink of becoming obsolete.

Earlier, in November, NNPCL announced that the refinery was back in operation, initially processing 60% of its full capacity, with efforts ongoing to increase output. The refinery currently processes a range of petroleum products, including kerosene, low-pour fuel oil, LPG, diesel, and petrol, which is further blended for use in vehicles.

The ongoing refurbishment of the refinery has brought it into the 21st century, with upgraded parts and newly installed pipelines. Onanuga highlighted that many components had not been replaced in 27 years, but with the overhaul, the refinery now meets modern standards.

During the visit, Onanuga’s team also observed ongoing work at the second Port Harcourt refinery, commissioned in 1989, where old, rusty parts are being replaced. Although a completion timeline was not disclosed, there is growing optimism about the plant’s imminent operational status, which will complement the 60,000bpd facility.

Onanuga concluded that the fact-finding mission has successfully dispelled rumors and doubts surrounding the Port Harcourt Refinery Complex, affirming that its revival is well underway.
