Civil Servants Face A Dismal Christmas: December Salaries Delayed
Federal civil servants are bracing for a subdued Christmas this year due to the late disbursement of their December 2024 salaries. Reports indicate that many employees also faced delays in receiving their November salaries, which were only disbursed during the second week of December…READ MORE…
Sources within the civil service pointed to issues originating from the Accountant General’s office, with others attributing the delays to a transition to a new payment system. Complaints from civil servants during a visit to the Federal Secretariat highlighted financial struggles, with one employee stating, “I can’t afford to travel this holiday because I’m in debt from the late November payment.”
Another civil servant echoed these sentiments: “This isn’t surprising, given our late November salaries. Rising food prices and holiday expenses make timely payment crucial.” An Assistant Director expressed frustration over being unable to afford holiday meals, urging the government to prioritize civil servant welfare.
The Federal Government has cited budgetary shortfalls in certain ministries as the primary cause for the delays. However, the Accountant General’s office announced that salary payments resumed on Monday, with efforts made to rectify prior shortfalls.
Mokwa added that while payments are underway, the timing for funds to reflect in bank accounts could vary. He acknowledged that the recent implementation of a higher minimum wage had compounded these disruptions, affecting budget allocations across ministries.
In light of economic challenges, President Bola Tinubu’s administration recently approved a substantial increase in the minimum wage, which now stands at N70,000, although budget allocations have been adjusted significantly. Future budgets indicate a planned increase in personnel costs as the government strives to meet new wage commitments, with personnel expenditures projected to rise significantly in the coming years.
