standards.
In a statement issued by Olufemi Soneye, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, it was revealed that the refurbishment of the 150,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) Port Harcourt Refinery, as well as the Kaduna Refinery, is a complete overhaul rather than the routine Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) practices of the past.
“A Shift to World-Class Standards”
Soneye emphasized that the upgrade of the Port Harcourt (60,000 bpd) and Warri refineries represents a significant achievement. He noted that the projects are part of a broader commitment to ensuring the refineries are sustainable and globally competitive.
Obasanjo’s Criticism Addressed
This update comes in response to comments by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who expressed doubts about the viability of the rehabilitated refineries, citing alleged corruption and inefficiencies. Obasanjo also questioned the accuracy of NNPCL’s claims regarding the refineries’ operational status.
Soneye, however, dismissed these concerns, reiterating that the NNPCL is committed to transparency and is delivering significant results.
“Building Sustainable Operations”
According to NNPCL, the renovation of the refineries is designed to address historical challenges, reduce reliance on imports, and position Nigeria as a key player in the global energy market. Soneye added, “This initiative underscores our commitment to ensuring the refineries meet international standards and deliver long-term value to Nigerians.”
The company is also implementing similar rehabilitation efforts at the second Port Harcourt Refinery, ensuring consistency across its facilities.
The ongoing projects represent a critical step toward achieving energy security and boosting Nigeria’s local refining capacity, reducing dependency on foreign refined products.
