Education (Return of Schools) (Amendment) Bill, the Rivers Electricity Market Bill, and the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Bill, 2024.

During the 94th legislative sitting on Thursday, lawmakers aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, moved to override the Governor’s assent after he withheld approval.

Majority Leader Major Jack and other members debated the bills, and Speaker Martin Amaewhule cited Section 100(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, granting the House the power to override the Governor’s veto.

When the Speaker put the motion to a vote, it was passed unanimously.

Speaking on the decision, Amaewhule accused Fubara of failing to deliver effective governance and criticized his perceived ineptitude, emphasizing that the progress of Rivers State cannot be stalled.

A statement from the Speaker’s media aide, Martins Wachukwu, confirmed the successful override of the Governor’s assent.

Amaewhule reaffirmed that the House remains committed to upholding the Constitution and democratic principles, with the three laws now in effect in Rivers State.
