Director General of the National Council on Climate Change, the Minister highlighted the dual role of women as both victims of and solution providers to climate challenges.
The meeting, which took place over the weekend, underscored the significant link between climate change and its disproportionate effects on women, particularly in rural areas.
In a statement signed by her Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Jonathan Eze, Hon. Sulaiman-Ibrahim stated:
“Women are key stakeholders in the fight against climate change. We must ensure their voices are heard and their unique perspectives are incorporated into national strategies.”
The Minister reaffirmed her Ministry’s commitment to partnering with the National Council on Climate Change to empower women as change agents in building a sustainable, climate-resilient Nigeria.
Dr. Maduekwe also reiterated that women, particularly in rural areas, are among the most affected by climate change due to their reliance on natural resources. However, she noted that women possess untapped potential as solution providers.
“Women are natural resource managers, caregivers, and community leaders,” Dr. Maduekwe stated. “Given the necessary support, they can drive climate resilience initiatives and lead sustainable solutions.”
Both leaders agreed on the importance of fostering partnerships to develop gender-responsive climate policies and programs, ensuring that women play a central role in climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.
The Minister commended Dr. Maduekwe’s dedication to advancing a gender-focused climate change agenda, marking a significant step toward empowering women to contribute actively to national and global climate goals.
