Sh**cking Looting Amid Tragedy: Governor Oyebanji Condemns Criminals After Deadly Fire
The fire, which started around 1:30 a.m., caused extensive damage to property valued at millions of naira before the Ekiti State Fire Services intervened. Thankfully, no lives were lost in the incident.
Represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, Oyebanji extended his condolences to the victims, promising that the state government would provide relief materials to alleviate their suffering. He also raised concerns about the cause of the fire, speculating it may have been triggered by an electrical spark due to high voltage, urging business owners to always turn off their lights when not in use.
The governor condemned the looting as a “despicable act” and emphasized that it is not acceptable in any society. He pledged that those responsible would be tracked down and prosecuted.
In his visit to the palace of the Onigede of Igede Ekiti, Oba James Aladesuru, the governor assured the monarch and the community that his government would immediately begin the process of evaluating the damages for compensation and support.
“I suspect the fire started from an electrical spark, and it is crucial for shop owners to heed the government’s advice to turn off their lights when not in use. The wires may have melted due to a voltage surge, leading to the fire,” Oyebanji stated.
The Onigede of Igede Ekiti expressed gratitude for the governor’s empathy and requested that swift palliative measures be put in place for the victims to recover and resume their businesses.
One of the victims, Mr. Chinedu Nbamu, thanked the governor for his visit and called for the swift arrest and prosecution of those involved in the looting, emphasizing that it should serve as a deterrent to others. He also clarified that the fire did not originate from his shop, as previously speculated.
The Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency is expected to begin an assessment of the damage soon, and the government has committed to ensuring that the victims receive the support they need.
