the former Anambra State governor highlighted the staggering number of Nigerians living in poverty, a situation that democracy was supposed to address. He pointed out that nearly 100 million Nigerians live in absolute poverty, while 150 million face multidimensional poverty.

“Democracy is rapidly losing its essence if it does not tackle the fundamental needs of its citizens, especially in key sectors like healthcare, education, and poverty reduction,” Obi tweeted.

The politician urged leaders to prioritize the eradication of poverty by strengthening independent institutions and ensuring economic growth that benefits the people. He also called for a focus on building accountability, justice, and fairness.

Obi posed crucial questions about the effectiveness of democracy in Nigeria: “Is democracy truly meeting the needs of Nigerians? Are we creating institutions that uphold accountability and justice?”

To achieve a functional democracy, Obi emphasized the need for strong institutions, governance that promotes both social and economic progress, active citizen participation, and the empowerment of youth in nation-building.

Citing Nelson Mandela’s words, Obi reminded that, “As long as poverty, injustice, and inequality exist, none of us can truly rest.” He urged that now is the time to deepen Nigeria’s democracy and build a better future for all citizens.

In light of rising coups across Africa and the growing instability of democracies globally, Obi stressed that democracy can only thrive with trust, strong institutions, and an unwavering commitment to the people’s welfare.

Obi also stressed that for democracy to succeed in Africa, it must extend beyond ceremonial elections, focusing on building institutions that earn the people’s trust and respect their will.

“Governance can only deliver tangible benefits when the will of the people prevails,” he concluded.
