The initiative follows the remarkable performance of the Nigerian Under-19 women’s cricket team, the Junior Female Yellow Greens, who made history at the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia this January.

In a stunning upset, Nigeria defeated New Zealand by two runs in the group stage, advancing to the Super 6 stage—an unprecedented feat for the country’s female cricket team. This marks Nigeria’s second World Cup appearance, with the men’s Under-19 team having previously competed in the 2019 tournament in South Africa.

As the team wraps up its campaign with a match against Ireland, Akpata credited the success to a structured development plan and increased investment in women’s cricket.

“Our original target was 2028, but these young players are surpassing expectations,” Akpata stated via the ICC Media Zone. “This proves that with strategic investment, we can achieve our goals sooner than planned.”

He highlighted key initiatives over the past two years, such as high-performance contracts for both male and female players and scholarship programs for young cricketers, all aimed at strengthening the sport’s foundation in Nigeria.

“Although we didn’t progress past the second round, the enthusiasm from fans—especially on digital platforms—has been overwhelming. People are setting alarms just to watch our matches,” Akpata added.

With growing national interest and accelerated progress, Nigeria’s cricket ambitions are now firmly set on securing a place at the 2028 World Cup.
