NANS Urges FG To Investigate Non-Payment Of ₦77,000 Allowance To Corps Members
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Federal Government to investigate the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over its failure to implement the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members. Despite the Federal Government’s approval of the increase from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, effective from July 2024, the NYSC has not begun payments……READ MORE
NANS expressed frustration over the delay, especially since NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, had previously announced that payments would begin by February 2025. According to NANS, corps members only received ₦33,000 as their February allowance instead of the ₦70,000 promised.
NANS questioned the NYSC’s failure to implement the increase, especially as many state governments and the Federal Government have started paying the new ₦70,000 minimum wage to their employees. The delay, NANS said, was unjust, and urged the NYSC to provide an explanation. They also warned that this failure to pay could demoralize corps members amid Nigeria’s current economic challenges.
The NANS leadership pledged to engage with the NYSC to clarify the situation, noting that while corps members haven’t received the new allowance, NYSC staff are already benefiting from the pay increase.
