At a press conference held in Lagos on Thursday, the student group expressed strong opposition to the tariff hike, emphasizing its adverse effects on students’ access to essential educational resources.

In a statement signed by Tiamiyu Olayinka, the NAUS National Vice President for the South-West, the organization stressed that affordable internet access is crucial for students, particularly in the digital age where online learning, research, and communication are essential.

Olayinka stated, “Students rely on affordable internet for virtual lectures, research, assignment submissions, and online discussions. The telecom tariff increase disrupts these vital academic activities.”

He urged the government and relevant authorities to swiftly address the matter, highlighting its significance for students’ academic success.

Beyond the telecom tariff issue, NAUS also raised concerns about rising insecurity on campuses, frequent power outages, and ongoing strikes, which continue to disrupt students’ educational progress.

Olayinka concluded by warning that if these issues are not resolved, students will be compelled to mobilize across the South-West in defense of their rights and to advocate for a better academic environment.
