EFCC Clarifies Ongoing Investigation Is Not Linked To Atiku, Sanwo-Olu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted media reports suggesting that its ongoing investigation into an alleged money laundering case involves political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The Commission explained that the investigation, which began in 2022, continues despite an attempt by the suspect to secure an injunction blocking her arrest and prosecution. On February 19, 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled in favor of law enforcement, affirming the authority of agencies to investigate any suspected criminal activity. The court also upheld an interim forfeiture order on assets linked to the suspect, which were believed to be proceeds of crime, and dismissed the suspect’s legal challenge.

The EFCC reiterated that its investigation is purely legal and free from political influence.

“The EFCC’s case is entirely unrelated to any political figures or transactions. The Commission remains apolitical and committed to combating corruption,” the statement emphasized.

The EFCC called on the public to ignore any claims of political interference and to continue supporting its efforts in addressing economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.
