Qing Madi: Predators in Music Industry Target Young Artists with Unfair Deals
Rising Afrobeats sensation, Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, better known as Qing Madi, has spoken out about the predatory nature of the Nigerian music industry, warning that many young artists are being exploited with unfair contracts.
During a recent appearance on the Lagos Meets London podcast, the 18-year-old singer described the industry as “dark,” citing her own personal experiences with manipulative professionals and contract disputes.
“I’ve dealt with a lot of contract issues. There are people in the industry who are extremely greedy and just want to take advantage of you,” she said. “I didn’t even plan to enter the music industry this way. I just wanted to write songs, earn some money, and go to school. But people started connecting with my music, and things grew from there. Unfortunately, not everyone’s intentions are pure.”
Qing Madi also shared how the relentless pressure of fame can dehumanize young artists, saying her mother helps keep her grounded.
“My mom still makes me do chores to remind me I’m a kid. Sometimes it feels like you’re just a machine and everyone around you is trying to figure out how to profit off you. It’s overwhelming.”
The young star’s candid remarks shed light on the challenges young creatives face in the industry, and the need for better support systems to protect their mental health and rights.
