Deadly Blow to Insurgents: 17 Boko Haram, ISWAP Fighters Eliminated in Borno Raid

Troops operating under the North East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have intensified their campaign against terrorism in Nigeria’s northeast, successfully neutralizing 17 suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters during coordinated operations across Borno State and parts of Adamawa.

According to iReporter Online, the clearance operations, which spanned several local government areas including Bama, Konduga, Gwoza, Magumeri, Biu, and Michika, were executed between July 23 and August 2. Backed by air support and local Civilian Joint Task Force units, the military forces engaged insurgents in various terrains, conducting ambushes, fighting patrols, and logistics disruption missions.

In a statement issued by Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Director of Army Public Relations for the Theatre Command, the offensive operations led to the elimination of 17 insurgents and the recovery of a cache of arms, including AK-47 rifles, PKT machine guns, ammunition, and several rifle magazines.

In addition to neutralizing the fighters, troops also seized substantial logistics materials believed to have been used by the terrorists. Items recovered included over 2,300 litres of diesel (AGO), 1,000 litres of petrol (PMS), generators, motorcycles, solar panels, food supplies, and a tricycle.

Significantly, over 14 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by the insurgents were discovered and safely neutralized. These devices, according to military officials, were strategically positioned to target both civilians and security personnel.

As part of wider stabilization efforts, the military facilitated the safe return of over 987 internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their ancestral homes in Mandaragrau, Biu Local Government Area. This move aligns with the Borno State Government’s broader resettlement strategy aimed at restoring displaced communities and reviving local economies.

The military also confirmed joint cross-border security collaborations with Nigerien forces in the Diffa–Duji–Damasak axis, enhancing regional counterterrorism synergy and civilian safety.

These developments, military officials say, reflect ongoing efforts by the high command to maintain security momentum and restore lasting peace to the Northeast region, enabling safe civilian resettlement and economic revitalization.
