ASUU Issues Strike Warning, Accuses Government of Neglecting University System

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has sounded the alarm over an impending nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of failing to address longstanding issues in public universities. In a strongly-worded statement released Saturday, the union warned that lecturers have been pushed to the brink by poor working conditions and unmet agreements.

ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna revealed that university teachers currently:

• Teach on empty stomachs

• Conduct research without essential materials

• Struggle with unpaid salaries and mounting personal debts

• Face deteriorating infrastructure and resources

The union particularly criticized Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa’s recent declaration that university strikes would never recur, questioning the government’s commitment to dialogue when the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement remains unimplemented eight months after a draft was submitted.
