Midnight Horror: Scores Trapped As Two-Storey Building Collapses In Oyingbo, Lagos

Tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday after a two-storey building collapsed at No. 54, Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop, near UBA Bank in Oyingbo, Lagos, leaving several residents trapped beneath the debris.

According to reports from emergency officials, the incident occurred shortly after midnight, sparking panic across the community as residents and passers-by launched desperate rescue efforts to save those buried under the rubble.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) confirmed the incident, disclosing that a distress call was received around 12:20 a.m., prompting an immediate response from firefighters at the Sari Iganmu Fire Station, who arrived at the scene nine minutes later to commence rescue operations.

The Director of the LSFRS, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that fifteen persons had been rescued alive, including seven adult males, four adult females, and four children—all with varying degrees of injury. The victims were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, and the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for emergency treatment.

Preliminary findings indicated that the collapsed structure had been previously marked as distressed by relevant authorities but remained occupied despite warnings. Emergency workers reportedly encountered difficulties accessing the site due to the densely populated layout of the area.

Adeseye noted that rescue operations were ongoing as officials continued to search for possible survivors trapped beneath the wreckage. She assured that the LSFRS, in collaboration with other emergency response teams such as the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and medical personnel, remained fully mobilised at the scene to ensure that all victims were safely recovered.
