A Lagos commuter, Yushab Abolore Ayomide, has recounted a tense encounter with a street beggar at Ikorodu Garage that escalated into an unusual experience during his journey to Oshodi. According to Ireporter Online, the incident occurred earlier in the week when the commuter, who had initially intended to board a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle, changed plans after discovering his wallet was missing and opted for a commercial minibus instead. While navigating the busy terminal, he was persistently approached by a beggar requesting money for transportation.

The man explained that he became suspicious of the beggar’s intentions and decided to engage him differently. In a move he later described as deliberate, he paid the ₦1,500 fare for the individual but insisted he remain on the bus until the final destination at Oshodi, rather than alighting midway as initially implied. He reportedly issued a stern warning to ensure compliance, turning what began as a routine request for assistance into a confrontational situation.

According to the account, by the time both men arrived in Oshodi, the beggar appeared subdued and hesitant, suggesting the experience may have had a lasting impact on him. The incident has since sparked conversations about the growing tensions between commuters and street beggars in Lagos, as well as broader concerns surrounding public safety, empathy, and interactions in crowded urban transport hubs.
