Awujale Throne Race: Five Princes Nominated By Kingmakers
According to Ireporter Online, the Ilamuren kingmakers in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Ode, have formally approved the nomination of five princes for consideration for the Awujale throne, following deliberations aimed at advancing the traditional succession process in line with established customs and legal provisions. The decision was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, and signed under the leadership of the Olisa, Rasheed Adeoye Adesanya, who heads the Ilamuren-in-Council and kingmakers.
The kingmakers explained that their action was guided by Section 4(2) of the Chiefs Law 1957 and the customary law governing the selection of the Awujale of Ijebuland. They noted that after several meetings convened to deliberate on a suitable successor, five qualified princes were recommended for the government’s consideration. The nominees are Prince Ademorin Aliu Kuye, Prince Isiaq Ayodele Adewale Adekoya (popularly known as Eleruja), Prince Onabanjo Abimbola John, Prince Oluwaseun Waheed Omopenu Onanuga, and Prince Olabode Onanuga.
In the letter, the kingmakers stated that while traditional practice allows for unanimous selection, they resolved to forward the five names to the state government for final consideration in the interest of fairness and stability. They further emphasized that the nomination was made with the overall development of Ijebu-Ode and Ogun State in mind, expressing confidence that the eventual choice would strengthen the Awujale institution and promote continued progress in the region.
