Vieira Warns Ronaldo’s Legacy On The Line, Morgan Blasts Fernandes After Portugal Draw
Former France midfielder Patrick Vieira has called on Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez to make a difficult selection decision by leaving captain Cristiano Ronaldo out of the starting lineup for the country’s next FIFA World Cup clash against Uzbekistan. Vieira’s remarks come in the wake of Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo, a match in which the veteran forward was unable to get on the scoresheet.
According to reports, the former Arsenal captain believes Martinez should prioritize the overall performance of the team ahead of Ronaldo’s stature and reputation. Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Vieira stated that the Portuguese manager must be prepared to make a bold decision if the team is likely to perform better without its long-serving captain in the starting eleven.
Vieira also expressed concern about Ronaldo’s enduring legacy, suggesting that repeated substitutions or underwhelming performances at this stage of his career could diminish the image he has built over two decades as one of football’s greatest players.
However, broadcaster Piers Morgan strongly defended Ronaldo, dismissing the criticism directed at the five-time Ballon d’Or winner and instead placing the spotlight on midfielder Bruno Fernandes. Speaking on Sports Uncensored, Morgan argued that Fernandes failed to make a meaningful impact against DR Congo and did little to provide the quality service required by Ronaldo.
Morgan maintained that Ronaldo, now operating primarily as a traditional striker rather than a wide attacker, depends heavily on creative support from his teammates, insisting that the Portugal captain was let down by the lack of quality supply in the final third rather than his own performance.
