According to Ireporter Online, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially announced his resignation from office, bringing an unexpected turn to UK politics less than two years after he assumed leadership.

Starmer made the announcement on Monday, June 22, during an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street, stating that his decision was driven by what he described as placing the country’s interest above personal ambition. He confirmed that he would also step down as leader of the Labour Party, adding that the process to select a new party leader would begin in July. He is expected to remain in office as caretaker Prime Minister until September, when a successor will be appointed.

Reports indicate that Starmer had been under increasing political pressure in recent months, amid declining public approval ratings and growing tension within the Labour Party. Over the weekend, he was said to have held private consultations with close allies while spending time with his family at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country residence, before finalising his decision.

His resignation follows intensified internal party dynamics after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham secured a commanding 55 percent victory in Makerfield, a development some Labour figures interpreted as a signal of shifting support within the party. While Starmer had previously insisted he would resist any leadership challenge, insiders suggest his position weakened significantly in the aftermath.

Starmer, who assumed office in July 2024, leaves behind a tenure marked by political turbulence, policy reversals, and mounting internal disputes within the ruling party.
