Troost-Ekong Backs Ghana To Hold England In World Cup Clash

Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has expressed confidence that Ghana can secure a positive result against England in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L clash scheduled for Tuesday in Foxborough.

According to Ireporter Online, Troost-Ekong backed the Black Stars to at least earn a point against the Three Lions, following their strong start to the tournament. Ghana opened their campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama, sealed by a 95th-minute goal from Caleb Yirenkyi in Toronto, a result that handed them momentum heading into their encounter with England.

The win marked Ghana’s sixth World Cup victory in 16 matches, equalling Nigeria’s record achieved in 21 appearances. Despite the intense rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana, Troost-Ekong stressed that African unity should take precedence on the global stage, noting that he would like to see all African teams perform well at the tournament.

He acknowledged Ghana’s resilience in their opening match, praising their tactical discipline and the impact of substitutes Brandon Thomas-Asante and Abdul Fatawu, who he said significantly changed the tempo of the game in the second half. He also suggested that their performance against Panama had already given England “something to think about” ahead of the showdown.

Troost-Ekong further highlighted uncertainties surrounding the availability of midfielder Thomas Partey, who missed Ghana’s opener after being denied entry into Canada, though he admitted his presence could influence the team’s balance.

On England’s prospects, the former defender referenced their 4-2 opening win over Croatia, where Harry Kane scored twice and Jude Bellingham alongside Marcus Rashford also found the net. However, he maintained that the Three Lions remain vulnerable at the back and could be tested by Ghana’s attacking approach.

Predicting a tightly contested encounter, Troost-Ekong said both sides have the quality to score and suggested the match could end in a draw.
