In a statement released through the League Managers Association, Mark Hughes and his wife Jill expressed deep sorrow over the devastating loss of their son, describing him as a loving family man whose absence will be profoundly felt.

Alex Hughes built a respected career in football after his playing days, having featured for Stockport County and Wrexham reserves before transitioning into performance analysis and recruitment. His professional journey began at Blackburn Rovers in 2007, where he worked as a performance analyst, before later roles at Manchester City and Fulham. He also spent time in Portugal working within a private academy setup between 2011 and 2014.

He later became a player agent before returning to club football, working with AFC Fylde and Morecambe, eventually joining Grimsby Town in July 2025 in a recruitment capacity.

Mark Hughes, 62, enjoyed a decorated football career playing for clubs including Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Everton, Southampton, and Blackburn Rovers, winning major domestic and European honours. He also earned 72 caps for Wales, scoring 16 goals, before moving into management roles with several clubs and the Welsh national team.
