Fresh Hope For Nnamdi Kanu? Tinubu’s Minister Gives Major Update

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has disclosed that political leaders and stakeholders in the South-East are actively exploring lawful and political avenues that could facilitate the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking during an inspection of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project in Epe, Lagos State, Umahi stated that the initiative forms part of broader efforts by governors and leaders in the region to promote lasting peace, security, and stability across the South-East.

According to the minister, South-East governors have continued to pursue measures aimed at addressing insecurity while simultaneously seeking political solutions regarding Kanu’s detention. He noted that regional leaders remain committed to restoring normalcy and creating an environment conducive to development.

Umahi also criticised former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing him of failing to take a firm public stance against insecurity and the Monday sit-at-home order observed in parts of the South-East. He argued that the silence of prominent political figures on the issue had not helped efforts to address the challenges confronting the region.

The minister further alleged that Obi’s political ambitions were influencing his approach to key regional issues, stressing that transparency and honesty were essential qualities for leadership.

Reacting to reports circulating on social media suggesting that Obi had promised to discontinue some of President Bola Tinubu’s flagship infrastructure projects if elected president, Umahi described the claim as troubling. While expressing hope that the reports were inaccurate, he maintained that Nigerians would oppose any move to halt critical national development projects.

He emphasized that effective leadership should be built on accountability, truthfulness, and a proven track record of public service. Umahi described the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a transformative infrastructure project capable of driving economic growth and national development, adding that it represents a key component of President Tinubu’s long-term vision for the country.

The minister noted that ongoing infrastructure investments, including initiatives designed to enhance economic activities along the River Niger corridor, would create significant opportunities for the South-East and other parts of Nigeria.

Umahi also declared that Ebonyi State remains firmly supportive of President Bola Tinubu, dismissing suggestions that the state aligns with the Obedient Movement. He stated that political leaders in the state had already endorsed the president and reaffirmed their commitment to his administration.

In addition, the minister challenged supporters of the Obedient Movement to compare Tinubu’s achievements as former governor of Lagos State with Obi’s record during his tenure as governor of Anambra State. He argued that such a comparison should focus on development plans, infrastructure projects, and the lasting impact of their respective administrations.
