Why EFCC Went After Me – Saraki Opens Up
Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has alleged that the cases brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were politically motivated, describing the actions as a deliberate witch hunt linked to tensions between the Senate and the anti-graft agency at the time.
According to Ireporter Online, Saraki claimed that his administration in the Senate ran into trouble after lawmakers declined to confirm an acting EFCC Chairman who appeared before the chamber for screening, citing concerns over qualifications and an unfavorable security report.
He explained that despite the Senate’s rejection, the nominee allegedly remained in office, a development he said triggered a chain of events that later affected him and others in leadership positions.
Saraki stated that those who opposed the nomination faced personal consequences, insisting that the backlash amounted to targeted persecution. He made the remarks during an interview with Vanguard, where he maintained that the Senate acted within its constitutional mandate.
In a related development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is set to investigate human rights activist Deji Adeyanju and social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, over allegations bordering on terror financing, suspicious funding channels, and potential security concerns.
According to Ireporter Online, the probe follows a petition submitted by lawyer Blessing Agbomhere, who urged the anti-graft agency to scrutinize the sources of funding behind their public campaigns, advocacy activities, media engagements, protests, and legal interventions.
The petition, dated June 17, 2026, called for a comprehensive review of whether the funds used for their operations were obtained through lawful means, while also raising questions about tax compliance, financial transparency, and regulatory adherence.
