El-Rufai’s Wife Slams Bail Terms As Impossible To Meet

The wife of former Kaduna State Governor, Asiya El-Rufai, has alleged that the bail conditions granted to her husband by the Federal High Court in Kaduna are impractical, making it difficult for him to secure his release from detention.

According to Ireporter Online, Asiya made the claims during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where she expressed concern over what she described as the unworkable nature of the court’s bail requirements.

She disclosed that the court approved bail for the former governor on the condition that he provides two sureties valued at ₦200 million each, alongside properties worth ₦200 million located in Kaduna’s Government Reserved Area (GRA). She added that the court also required an attestation from the Kaduna State Traditional Council as part of the bail conditions.

However, Asiya stated that efforts to satisfy the conditions had stalled because the traditional council had reportedly declined to issue the required attestation. According to her, no specific reason was provided for the refusal, except that the council indicated it was unable to comply with the request.

She argued that her husband’s constitutional rights, including his rights to life, healthcare, and social interaction, should be protected, stressing that the charges against him are bailable under Nigerian law.

Asiya further maintained that despite repeated applications for bail at the High Court being unsuccessful, the Federal High Court eventually granted bail under conditions that she believes are unrealistic and nearly impossible to fulfil. She insisted that the stringent requirements have effectively prevented the former governor from regaining his freedom, despite the nature of the offences for which he is standing trial.
