Ukraine’s Prime Minister Steps Down As Zelensky Prepares New Foreign Policy Team

Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, has resigned as President Volodymyr Zelensky embarks on a sweeping government restructuring aimed at repositioning the country to tackle growing military, diplomatic and economic challenges.

According to Ireporter Online, Ukraine’s parliament formally approved Svyrydenko’s resignation during a vote on Tuesday, ending her tenure as head of government. While President Zelensky has yet to announce a replacement, he explained that the administration is adjusting its political strategy to address emerging priorities and evolving national challenges.

The leadership transition comes at a crucial period in Ukraine’s prolonged conflict with Russia, as Moscow continues intensified missile attacks on Ukrainian cities while Kyiv seeks to strengthen its air defence capabilities and secure additional international support.

Svyrydenko, who assumed office in July 2025, played a significant role in Ukraine’s diplomatic engagement with the United States. She was instrumental in maintaining close ties with senior American officials and led negotiations on a key minerals investment agreement between Kyiv and Washington following a tense meeting between President Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.

Despite stepping down as prime minister, Zelensky suggested that Svyrydenko could remain within his administration in another senior capacity. The president recently disclosed plans to reorganize responsibilities within his government by assigning different officials to oversee various aspects of foreign policy. He also revealed that he had offered Svyrydenko a new role focused on managing relations with a key international partner, although he did not identify the country or organization involved.

Reacting to the development, Svyrydenko defended her administration’s performance, stating that her government delivered concrete results during its time in office. She also shared a photograph of herself making a heart gesture while addressing members of parliament.

In Ukraine’s political system, the prime minister primarily oversees domestic governance, economic policy and the implementation of government programmes, while decisions concerning military operations and battlefield strategy remain largely under the authority of President Zelensky and the country’s senior military leadership.

Media reports in Ukraine have identified Naftogaz Chief Executive Officer Sergiy Koretsky as the leading contender to become the country’s next prime minister. Zelensky met with Koretsky over the weekend shortly after announcing plans for the cabinet reshuffle and later praised his leadership in the country’s energy sector, further fuelling speculation that he could soon be nominated for the role.

Energy security has become one of Ukraine’s most urgent concerns as the ongoing war continues to damage critical infrastructure through repeated missile and drone attacks, causing widespread power outages, particularly during the winter season.

Ukraine has also announced plans to begin domestic production of U.S.-made Patriot air defence systems as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s defensive capabilities and protect civilians and critical infrastructure.

The planned government reshuffle is expected to reshape Ukraine’s foreign policy, economic management and engagement with strategic international allies as Kyiv continues to seek military and financial support. President Zelensky has maintained that the changes are essential to prepare the government for the next phase of the country’s diplomatic, security and wartime challenges.
