JUST IN: Why G5 Governors May Endorse Obasanjo’s Candidate

New information has emerged as to why the five disgruntled Peoples Democratic Party governors may support former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s appointed candidate in the 2023 presidential election.

The Integrity Group, also known as the G-5, is currently meeting in London to devise a strategy for the 2023 presidential election, as previously reported by Tribune Online.

The governors had split with the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over his alleged refusal to persuade the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to resign after the latter, a northerner, won the party’s presidential ticket.

According to a reliable source close to the G-5, the Integrity Group may support Obasanjo’s candidate (Peter Obi).

In August, the former President met with the governors in London, where he reportedly lobbied for Obi.

According to Tribune Online, the governors are likely considering Peter Obi for two reasons. For starters, they see him as the new entrant into the fold, breaking the old order that has existed in Nigeria’s political structure for years. Another reason is that supporting Tinubu as their direct opposition candidate would be difficult.

Another source stated that if Obi does not win, the G-5 Governors have stated their position on where they will pitch their tent.

“Even if Obi did not win, they (G-5 Governors) would have still been satisfied that they made their grievances known about their candidate,” the source told Tribune Online.

The governors will almost certainly announce their preferred candidate in early January.
