₦1bn Battle Begins! Kebbi, UNICEF Partner To Wipe Out Child Hunger
UNICEF and Kebbi State Commit ₦1 Billion to Combat Malnutrition, Launch Food and Nutrition Policy
In a bold move to combat the soaring rate of malnutrition in Kebbi State, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in partnership with the Kebbi State Government, has officially launched the Kebbi State Food and Nutrition Policy.
According to IReporter Online, the initiative includes a joint commitment of ₦1 billion in counterpart funding, which will be dedicated to procuring essential nutrition commodities for vulnerable communities.
According to IReporter Online, UNICEF disclosed that Kebbi currently ranks among the states with the highest malnutrition rates in Nigeria, with an alarming 60% of children under five years of age affected.
This shocking statistic has prompted swift action, leading to the unveiling of the policy framework aimed at improving equitable access to life-saving nutrition services.
During the launch held in Birnin Kebbi, the State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Abba Kalgo, praised both partners for their unwavering dedication to tackling nutrition challenges.
Governor Nasir Idris, while unveiling the document, also approved six months of maternity leave for nursing mothers—an essential demand by UNICEF to aid breastfeeding and reduce child malnutrition.
The newly introduced policy is expected to usher in a more coordinated and impactful response to malnutrition across the state. According to IReporter Online, health experts are optimistic that Governor Idris’ swift approval of funding and strategic maternal support measures will significantly reduce cases of acute malnutrition in Kebbi State.
