Akwa Ibom NMA Denies Reports Of New Crisis
The Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State chapter, Dr Aniekan Peter, has debunked media reports that the association had been enmeshed in a fresh crisis, labelling it as misleading.
Aggrieved members of the association had reportedly circulated an internal audit report, raising tension that a fresh crisis had erupted in the association over the alleged misappropriation of funds by the former Prof Emem Abraham-led executive council.
Speaking while addressing newsmen in Uyo, the state capital, after a leadership retreat on Saturday, Peter stated that the former chairman has never at any point been indicted for any financial crimes in the association.
“As the Chairman of NMA AKS, in conjunction with my executives seated here, I wish to debunk that this report is misleading, and did not emanate from NMA AKS.
Peter stated, “The audit report presented by the internal auditors at the Annual General Meeting was not adopted and discussed by the Congress because there were discrepancies and the document was not signed by the committee’s Secretary.
“Arising from those observations, the congress, by way of a motion well moved and seconded by the association’s past chairmen, decided to invite unbiased external auditors to audit the association’s accounts.
“We are still expecting the documents from the chairman of the audit committee to send to external auditors as adopted by the congress,” adding that “at no point in time was Prof Emem Abraham, the immediate past chairman, indicted for any financial crimes in the association.”
The chairman, however, vowed that the outcome of the external audit report would be implemented to the letter, saying, “I always stand for what is right. Whatever will be the outcome of the external auditors will be discussed at the congress and made known to the public; it’s not going to be hidden, and whoever is involved will be punished.”
He urged the public to disregard any publications on the NMA from individuals whose aim is to bring the image and noble traditions of the association to disrepute.
