The All Progressives Congress (APC) has clinched a major victory in Rivers State, as its chairmanship candidate in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Barrister James A. James, was declared winner of Saturday’s local government election.

The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Michael Odey, announced the result on Sunday, confirming that James polled 37,822 votes to secure the seat.

“The APC candidate, Barr. James A. James, having obtained the highest number of valid votes, is hereby returned elected as Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area,” Odey declared.

Notably absent from the exercise was suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, an indigene of the LGA. The governor, who failed to appear at his Ward 5, Unit polling station, left many of his supporters and kinsmen disappointed after waiting in vain for hours.

Governor Fubara, along with members of the State House of Assembly, remains suspended from office following the declaration of a state of emergency by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, amid the protracted political crisis rocking the state.

In the wake of the suspension, President Tinubu appointed retired Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, pending the resolution of the crisis.
